The clarinet is a woodwind instrument. It is played by blowing through the mouthpiece and pressing keys to form different notes. A single reed is attached to the mouthpiece. It is the vibration of this reed that produces the sound.

It is thought that the clarinet was invented in Germany around the year 1700. The name "clarinet" likely comes from the French terms for trumpet, as this new instrument made playing the high notes written for trumpet players much easier. Early clarinets may have sounded more like the trumpet. Today, clarinets are used by soloists, marching bands, and orchestras.

Did you know? There are at least 12 different kinds of clarinet, but the B-flat clarinet is the most popular. Most are made of wood, but all-metal clarinets also exist. Since its invention, the clarinet has inspired many famous composers, including Mozart and Brahms, to write music specifically for this instrument.
